Nativity Scene “Angelicum. The Splendour of the Neapolitan Nativity Scene”

The Monumental Neapolitan Nativity Scene, the central feature of the Angelicum exhibition at La Lonja in Casa del Reloj, Arganzuela District, brings together more than 200 figures and 500 architectural and scenic elements of great beauty and artistic value. Across 100 square metres, visitors can immerse themselves in 18th-century Naples, the most populous and vibrant city in Europe, and discover its trades, customs, and mythological or popular characters. Pastoral and urban scenes blend with the splendour of the procession of the Magi and the delicacy of the Nativity group.

Directed by José Luis Mayo Lebrija and his Art Workshop, the installation reveals the historical and symbolic background of the Neapolitan nativity scene and showcases pieces from the prestigious Basanta-Martín Collection.

Saint Joseph: Carpenter, Husband and Father

This exhibition and its various scenographies pay tribute to the figure of Saint Joseph, the silent protagonist of the mystery of Christmas. Through the represented scenes, his role as a humble worker, father, and faithful guardian of the Child Jesus and Mary is emphasised. His carpenter’s workshop becomes a symbol of daily effort and love expressed through service. As a husband, he embodies tenderness, trust, and respect towards God’s plan. As a father, his example of care and protection highlights fatherhood as a vocation of devotion.

The exhibition also includes a selection of representative figures by renowned Spanish artists, as well as canvases, photographs, and posters illustrating Christmas scenes and aspects of traditional Spanish culture. These are accompanied by explanatory texts that guide visitors through a route full of symbolism and devotion.

Finally, a large Nativity scene forms the centrepiece of the exhibition, highlighting the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.
