Traditional Solidarity Nativity Scene of San Rafael

From 1 December to 7 January, from 11:30am to 1:30pm and from 4:30pm to 8pm

Open Sundays and public holidays

The traditional Nativity Scene of San Rafael of the Brotherhood of Saint John of God reopens its doors in its usual location in the San Juan de Dios Shelter, with a revamped light and sound installation and a different ambience, alongside the traditional model railway.

More than 100 years old, the Solidarity Nativity Scene of San Rafael of the Brotherhood of Saint John of God is the oldest nativity scene in the city of Madrid. Every year since it was first set up, more than 20,000 people visit its installations to admire figures of great artistic value from different parts of Spain, such as Olot (Girona) and Murcia, among others.

During the post-war years, anonymous donations from the general public made it possible to finance part of the social work carried out by the Hospitaller Order of the Brotherhood of Saint John of God in Madrid. Today, the San Rafael Nativity Scene continues to be a reference point for solidarity with the poorest. All the proceeds from the Nativity Scene go to finance the aid programmes of the San Juan de Dios Shelter for the homeless. The Brotherhood of St. John of God cares for more than 800 homeless people in its two shelters in Madrid, providing them with accommodation, food and the rehabilitation services needed to facilitate their reintegration into society.
